System One models

System One models

Understand how focused classification models help Relay characterize requests before a response model does the work.

In Relay, System One models are focused classification models used to make structured judgments about a request, rather than generate its final answer. They help identify the requested work—for example, explaining, summarizing, or modifying code.

The classifier and the response model have different jobs. Selecting Laya for classification does not make Laya your chat model, change your provider credentials, or add a model to a Group.

Start with the Laya setup guide. Relay also includes AnchorShell characterization, so a separate System One worker is optional.

Classification versus routing

Classification describes the work and records its result in request logs. Community users can use Laya without hosted Smart Groups.

Smart routing uses classification to choose among configured model assignments. Hosted Smart Groups support this behavior; ordinary Groups retain their configured ordering, wait policy, and fallbacks. Classification does not bypass model access, guardrails, or limits.

Confidence and timing

A confidence score describes the classifier's decision, not a guarantee that the answer will be correct. Scores from different engines are not necessarily calibrated alike. Review representative requests before relying on an engine for routing.

System One is not a latency guarantee. Hardware, input size, worker load, and queueing all affect classification time. Ordinary request classification may complete in the background, while Smart Groups require a routing decision. If the selected worker is unavailable, Relay uses its fallback behavior rather than silently rewriting your saved engine choice.
